CURL SERIES: HOW TO PICK YOUR CURLING IRON BARREL SIZE

So excited to share with you the third and final video in my CURL SERIES!  One of the most common mistakes I see when it comes to curls is picking the wrong barrel size!  Most women are afraid of the small barrel because they think it will make the curl too tight but I love the texture it gives.  If you find that your curls don’t hold then go down a size!  I love the hot tools curling irons and in this video I use a 1.25 in, 1 in, and a 3/4 in. barrel!

We curled her hair the exact same way in this video for comparison purposes but if you want a more “undone” curl you could leave the ends out and alternate the curl pattern forward and back but always starting away from the face.  When using any heat tool you always want to use heat protection.  I absolutely LOVE that Living Proof Flex allows you to set the curl and provide heat protection in one product!

CURL SERIES: HOW TO USE HOT ROLLERS

I’m so excited to be sharing with you all PART 2 in my CURL SERIES today!  Make sure you check out PART 1 if you haven’t had a chance…

There is no denying that hot rollers are hands down the biggest bang for your buck in the styling department.  My mom had me in hot rollers from the moment my hair would wrap around a roller (thank you Mom!).  I think rollers get a bad wrap because they were so big in the 80’s but a good set of hot rollers is 100% still relevant today especially if you are short on time.

Yes that’s me age 3ish…

The key is having a set that has both metal clips for the top and butterfly clips for the back.  The metal clips keep it from leaving a dent on your hair on top and the butterfly clips give you more grip on the hard to reach areas in back.  I like this set and this is the set I used for the video.  Once you practice a few times you will love how quick you can get your rollers in and then go do something else (I usually put my makeup on and that’s it they are ready).  They also make a little 5 roller travel set that is great for a little added volume at the crown for when you are really pressed for time.

Here ya go!  My video tutorial for How to Use Hot Rollers…

CURL SERIES: 3 Looks 1 Iron

Okay I did it…I finally made you all a video tutorial.  When deciding what my readers and clients would benefit from the most, I decided that tackling curls would be the best place to start.  Curls are still the most coveted look and yet women are still perplexed on how to pull it off and tangled in their curling irons.  This is the first video in my CURL SERIES (2 more coming soon).  This video will show you 3 simple looks using just ONE curling iron.

I’d love to hear from you once you try these out and let me know what videos you’d like to see in the future in the comments below!  Enjoy…

The Greatest Curling Iron Set Ever

I know what you’re thinking…dramatic much on the title?  NO!  I have been die hard on my curling iron I have been using since beauty school and have not deviated.  Until now.  I typically try out every new tool when they come out and unless I just LOVE it I toss it in our tool drawer at the salon.  I’ve been eyeing this curl set since it came out because to be completely honest I thought it would photograph well.  I finally got my hands on one a couple of weeks ago in the salon and boy does this thing perform!  It’s not cheap but I really do think this is worth your money because it does everything it says it will.

HERE’S THE SCOOP ON WHY YOU SHOULD SPLURGE:

  • It’s convertible – meaning you only have one plug in base and then you switch out all the barrels!
  • Tourmaline – this is fancy talk for all the shine, quick styling and less frizz
  • Award Winning – it won the Allure Best of Beauty prize b/c they know what’s up
  • Adjustable Heat  – this is so important and will keep you from frying your hair
  • Long Barrel – this is REALLY important if you have long hair b/c you can cover more ground
  • Auto-Off – it turns itself off after an hour which is great for people like me that are notorious for leaving the house with an iron on (sorry Trev!)

You can also buy each part separately but if you want to save around $80 I recommend getting the full set!

Don’t know why you need more than one barrel?  Watch THIS.  Don’t know how to use a curling iron?  Watch THIS.

I put it to the test when we did my recent post for Living Proof showcasing my new favorite product (Living Proof Dry Volume Blast) and even the photographer and models were impressed.

Hop on over to The Strand to see the full post and see what we did with Sara’s hair once it was prepped with all of those curls and volume.  We used the one inch clip attachment!

I’ve included links to the curling iron set at Anthro, Nordstrom AND Sephora in case you earn points or have a gift card at one or the other!  All of them also offer the individual options as well.

The Two Most Requested Haircuts for Spring

Today I’m over on the Living Proof blog teaming up with the dynamic duo from Of The People Agency and talking tips on getting (and maintaining) the haircut of your dreams.  No matter what look you are going for make sure you check out the full post before you head out for your next cut.  Additionally, I wanted to elaborate a little more on these two specific haircuts that solve two specific problems…

1.)  I’m terrified of layers and I don’t want to lose length but I want a change…

AND

2.)  I want something fresh without it turning into “the Rachel” or a “mom-bob”…

Keep scrolling because I’ve got you covered with both dilemmas.

Two Most Requested Haircuts for Spring

First up, my long haired mavens.  Chances are you had one bad layered cut at some point in your life that convinced you that you don’t like “layers”. Trust me, layers are your friend especially if your cut tends to get too bulky or won’t hold a curl.  We’ve all seen bad layers but if you find a good stylist you trust this shouldn’t be something to be afraid of.  Also at a point, your hair will reach it’s terminal length and give up.  So if Rapunzel like length is what you are dreaming of make sure you keep it trimmed frequently!

Two Most Requested Haircuts for Spring 2To get this cut, ask for long layers focusing them around the face.  Don’t panic, as I perform this cut, I can sense clients tensing up as I take length off the front (usually around nose to chin level) but when they see it blown out (or even better with curls) it all blends perfectly and breathes new life into a previously drab situation.

Two Most Requested Haircuts for Spring 3

I styled Erin’s hair with a round brush using PHD 5 in 1 styling product and curled it using a 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron just like in this tutorial.

Two Most Requested Haircuts for Spring 4Next up – for my ladies ready to lose some length!  This cut is so much fun to do because it has texture and movement but doesn’t get “flippy” on the ends or too heavy.  It can be short and works on fine hair or you can leave it long and remove bulk from dense hair!  I use a razor and an undercut technique leaving the front slightly longer than the back resulting in the ultimate cool girl bob (or lob).

Two Most Requested Haircuts for Spring 6

I styled Lauren’s hair by blowing it out with Living Proof Instant Texture to give it some grip while allowing her natural texture to come out and then wrapped large sections around a 1 inch curling iron leaving the ends out for an undone look!

Two Most Requested Haircuts for Spring 7

Regardless of your cut, split ends are the enemy so try out the new Living Proof Fresh Cut split end mender.  It’s incredibly soft and will actually zip your split ends shut preventing any further damage.

What do you think?  Would you wear one of these looks?  Let me know in the comments below…
